1. A well-fitted travel carrier
This is the single most important purchase you’ll make. Look for an airline-approved carrier with good ventilation, a sturdy base, and enough room for your dog to stand and turn around. Oliver’s favorite has a soft fleece liner and mesh windows so he can watch the world go by.
2. A no-escape harness
Small dogs can slip out of standard collars in a heartbeat, especially in unfamiliar places. A snug, escape-proof harness keeps your pup secure during walks, rest stops, and busy airports.
3. A collapsible water bowl
Hydration matters, and a lightweight silicone bowl that folds flat takes up almost no space. We clip ours to the outside of the travel bag for quick water breaks.
4. A familiar blanket or bed
A travel bed that smells like home works wonders for anxious dogs. It turns a strange hotel room into a comforting space and helps your dog settle faster.
5. Waste bags (more than you think)
Always pack double. A compact dispenser that clips to the leash means you’re never caught without one.
6. Familiar food and treats
Travel is not the time to switch your dog’s diet. Pack enough of their regular food, plus a few high-value treats for rewarding calm behavior on the go.
7. A basic first-aid kit
A few bandages, pet-safe antiseptic wipes, tweezers, and any medications your dog takes can save the day far from home.
8. Copies of vaccination records
Many hotels, airlines, and dog parks ask for proof of vaccinations. Keep a digital copy on your phone and a printed copy in your bag.
9. A calming aid for nervous travelers
Whether it’s a calming chew, an anxiety wrap, or a favorite toy, having something to soothe your dog makes long journeys easier on everyone.
