Oliver’s first real desert adventure took us to El Conquistador Tucson, a sprawling Hilton resort tucked against the Santa Catalina Mountains in Oro Valley. Wide-open skies, saguaro cactus everywhere, and plenty of room for a small dog to explore — it was a completely different kind of trip from our city stays, and a great one.
What to know about the pet policy
El Conquistador welcomes dogs, but the details matter more here than at a no-fee hotel, so plan ahead:
- Up to 2 pets per room are allowed.
- There’s a weight limit of 75 lbs — no problem for a small dog like Oliver.
- Expect a pet fee of around $50 per pet, per stay (some sources list a bit more, so confirm the current amount when you book).
- Pets are allowed in specific rooms only, so request a pet-friendly room directly with the resort ahead of time.
Room to roam
The resort grounds are huge, with grassy areas, a designated dog potty spot, and waste bags provided. After cramped city sidewalks, Oliver loved having so much space to sniff and stretch his legs between adventures.
Desert tips for small dogs
The desert is beautiful, but it asks a little extra care from small-dog parents:
- Watch the pavement. Sun-baked ground gets hot enough to burn paw pads. Walk early in the morning or after sunset, and test the pavement with your hand first.
- Hydrate constantly. Small dogs dehydrate fast in dry heat — carry water and a collapsible bowl everywhere.
- Mind the wildlife and cactus. Keep your pup leashed and on paths; cactus spines and desert critters are no fun for curious noses.
- Find the shade. Plan midday downtime in the cool room during the hottest hours.
The verdict
El Conquistador made a wonderful base for a desert trip with a small dog — gorgeous scenery, space to roam, and dog-friendly grounds. Just book your pet-friendly room in advance and confirm the current fee, since resort policies can change. With a little heat planning, it’s a fantastic Southwest escape for you and your pup.
